Welcome to the Mount Rushmore State! Nestled in the North Central Region of the United States, South Dakota offers a beautiful site for truckers to admire. The state is dominated by peaceful, wide-rolling plains - its eastern region belongs to the Prairie Plains, while the western part forms a portion of the Great Plains. This part of the landscape transitions from flat river valleys in the east to plateaus, buttes, and a canyon-scarred terrain in the west.

The Mount Rushmore state is located in the North Central Region of the United States. As you can see on the screenshots from these locations, South Dakota's landscape offers a truly unique driving experience, ranging from vast open plains with far-reaching views across the countryside to rolling hills, lush green forests, fertile fields, and striking rock formations along the roadside.

Building South Dakota with Evgeny
"I started my work on South Dakota with a pretty wide range of responsibilities. Besides the usual map design - building roads, shaping terrain, building towns - I also focus on several more specialized areas. For example, I work on the design of big, complex industrial sites and depots. Another part of my job is managing the asset list and giving feedback on anything related to depots or more generic (non-vegetation) assets. I also get the chance to create environments and small decorative scenes for depots across all of our projects," he says.

Badlands
Situated along the edge of the Great Plains in southwestern South Dakota, Badlands National Park spans 244,000 acres of dramatically eroded buttes, pinnacles, and spires, alongside the largest protected mixed-grass prairie in the United States.

We're taking you on a journey through the beautiful Black Hills, one of South Dakota's most iconic regions, which we of course couldn't miss including in our upcoming South Dakota DLC for American Truck Simulator. From legendary Wild West history to breathtaking mountain highways, let us share some of the work our talented teams have done to faithfully recreate this beautiful region.

Mount Rushmore
Standing high above the surrounding landscape, Mount Rushmore features the monumental granite faces of four U.S. presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Carved into the side of the mountain between 1927 and 1941, the monument has become one of the most famous landmarks in the United States, attracting millions of visitors from around the world each year.

Unlike standard prefabs, these depots have been carefully assembled by our map designers using a variety of assets, giving each one a distinct look and feel. Many of them are based on real-world locations, which perhaps some of you might recognise if you live locally or visit South Dakota often.

Agriculture plays a major role in South Dakota’s economy, and players will find plenty of job contract opportunities from a range of farming industries across the state. One such location can be found near the city of Aberdeen, where you'll discover a large farm facility featuring numerous silos used for storing crops and seeds before they are shipped further afield. Set amongst the vast prairies and open spaces that define much of South Dakota's landscape, drivers will be treated to panoramic views and seemingly endless horizons as they travel between jobs.

South Dakota's economy is built on a strong foundation of manufacturing, agriculture, and construction. While the state is well known for its farming and ranching, it is also home to a growing manufacturing sector that produces everything from trailers and heavy equipment to food products distributed across the country. As always, we've taken inspiration from these real-world industries to create authentic locations that bring the state's economy to life.

Hot Springs
Known for its naturally warm mineral waters, historic architecture, and outdoor activities, this charming town offers drivers a relaxing yet memorable stop on their journey through the Mount Rushmore State. Our team has been busy at work recreating its virtual counterpart in this upcoming DLC, including several landmarks.

Rapid City
Rapid City is located in a picturesque landscape surrounded by some of South Dakota's most popular natural attractions. Heading west opens the way to the Black Hills National Forest and the iconic Mount Rushmore - the reason Rapid City is also known as the Gateway to the Black Hills. Traveling east along Interstate 90 takes you toward the rugged landscapes of Badlands National Park.

Sioux Falls
Located in the southeastern corner of South Dakota, Sioux Falls is the state's largest city. Built around the Big Sioux River, the city has grown from a small historic settlement into a bustling city in the Midwest, while still retaining many of its historic landmarks. Our map team has worked to recreate many of the locations that make Sioux Falls instantly recognisable, giving drivers plenty to discover as they travel through the city.

Pierre
While being a relatively small town with just around 14,000 residents, Pierre is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. Welcoming nearly 3 million visitors each year, it is a destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering world-class fishing, scenic trails, and endless opportunities for water recreation. This is made possible by its location along the banks of the Missouri River, set between Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe, both created by dams.

While exploring South Dakota, you’ll discover a variety of truck stops scattered across the state. Drivers can look forward to taking a break and refueling in towns and cities like Buffalo, Spearfish, Martin, and Murdo, each offering its own unique atmosphere.

And when you're driving through a beautiful state like South Dakota, those breaks become even better, with scenic views waiting around every corner. Just remember that the law requires you to take regular rest periods, and these truck stops offer the perfect places to relax, recharge, and stay safe on the road.

In its real-world counterpart, South Dakota has over 82,000 miles of roads, but most of them aren't busy highways - they're quiet country lanes, winding backroads, and scenic stretches that take you through rolling plains, open fields, and charming small towns. The state highways make up less than 10% of the network, yet they carry more than two-thirds of the traffic, connecting key cities and towns.

As you know, transporting cargo of this size is no small task. Its large scale requires not only escort vehicles and police assistance, but also special routes that are wide and spacious enough for your truck to safely pass through, helping ensure a smooth delivery. Of course, successful drivers are also adequately compensated for the responsibility that comes with maneuvering such a colossal load!
